Stichting Natuur en Milieu, The Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment, is an independent environmental organization committed to securing a healthy natural environment. We are helping to build a sustainable society in which nature, the environment and the landscape are treated with care and respect.
We want a world in which we can enjoy nature close to home, a world in which we can breathe clean air and travel without harming the environment or other people. Open landscapes, unspoilt views, liveable neighbourhoods in sustainable cities, health; these are subjects that affect us all. These are the fragile values we seek to protect, for present and future generations.
Our main strength lies in influencing the policy-making process. We conduct publicity campaigns and stimulate discussion and debate. We also conduct research and publish our findings. We mobilize public opinion and put pressure on key policymakers at the European, national and local levels.
One of N&M’s expertise area is sustainability mainly focused on environmentally improved production and products. One of the topics is the use of hazardous chemicals. Our ultimate goal is an industry that only uses chemicals when absolutely necessary. Companies should possess sufficient knowledge about the dangers of the substances they use and they should always choose the least hazardous option available. These are the basic elements of a precautionary approach to the use of chemicals.
Chemicals based on Nanotechnology is now one of the main issues, because it can have significant environmental and health impacts. N&M already highlighted in a campaign the application of nanoparticles in suncreens and their role in catalysing DNA damage.
Within the Nanocap project N&M wants a special focus on: the dramatic increase of exposure to nanoparticles in the near future and the implications for humans (workers/consumers) and the environment, the lack of a regulatory framework and the immediate need for tests to be developed to be able to estimate long-term and environmental risks. N&M also wants to play a role in public involvement.
